For emergency medicine physicians, there is no such thing as “a typical day.” One patient may present with symptoms of strep throat; the next could be suffering a life-threatening heart attack. Caregivers must be ready to respond, making each day unpredictable and fast-paced. “Emergency medicine is a unique specialty,” said Jessica Goldstein, MD, FACEP, Chief Medical Officer, UH Ahuja Medical Center. “Teamwork is paramount, and the camaraderie is energizing and fulfilling.”

Dr. Goldstein began her UH career in 2010, serving as the first Division Chief of Emergency Medicine at UH Ahuja Medical Center before being named Medical Director of the UH Emergency Medicine Quality Network. In 2020, she was the recipient of the Anton Fellowship for Physician Leadership and assumed her current position in 2021. “UH has supported my professional growth, and UH leaders have always encouraged me to widen my lens beyond the emergency room,” she shared. “I am grateful for the opportunity to continually grow and lead with purpose.”

Looking to the Future

As Chief Medical Officer — as well as a clinically practicing emergency medicine physician — at UH Ahuja Medical Center, Dr. Goldstein is excited for the new Emergency Department, part of the UH Ahuja Phase 2 expansion. When the space opens this summer, it will feature 42 patient beds, flexible pediatric and behavioral health zones and two large resuscitation bays.

Dr. Goldstein and her husband, Jonathan Klein, MD, also an emergency medicine physician, know the increased capacity and improved efficiencies will benefit patients and caregivers alike. To show their support, they teamed up with Dr. Goldstein's parents, Sarajane and Gerald Goldstein, to make a charitable gift to advance the project, specifically for the Emergency Department conference room.

”Emergency care involves an entire team and everyone has to play a role to maximize patient care,” said Dr. Goldstein. “The conference room will provide space for caregivers to connect, problem solve, debrief, learn and strategize for the best results of our patients. My family and I hope this dedicated space will inspire those who use it to lead with courage and grace and to think big.”
