Scientific Discoveries Support Comprehensive Care at UH Rainbow

William “Trey” Clark had more intense medical procedures in his first week of life than many do in a lifetime. Born with Spina Bifida, Trey needed a surgical procedure called a myelomeningocele repair followed by a shunt to drain fluid off his brain. “He has never let his diagnosis define him or hold him back,” said Trey’s mom, Teresa, sharing that, most days, her fun-loving, eight-year-old son can be found dancing, reading, playing video games, or watching wrestling.

Like many kids with Spina Bifida, Trey sees multiple pediatric specialists. Thankfully, UH Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital takes a multidisciplinary team approach to Spina Bifida care, allowing Trey to see all of his caregivers at the same location on the same day. This dynamic has worked well for Trey and his family. “All the doctors know him. He shares different inside jokes with the staff. We really feel a part of the Rainbow family,” expressed Teresa.

In addition to providing comprehensive care for patients like Trey, a key part of the UH mission is scientific discovery. UH Cures powered by Harrington Discovery Institute leads pioneering medical research and develops those discoveries into new, promising treatment options. Today, UH Cures is forging new paths and advancing drug development for a wide variety of common and rare diseases.

UH Cures is the product of more than just passion and persistence, though. It is also the product of philanthropy. Join us on the path to a cure. Celebrate Giving Tuesday with a gift to UH Cures. Your support will drive groundbreaking research and make new medicines possible.

For each dollar you donate, your impact will be DOUBLED thanks to a $25,000 match from a generous UH benefactor.
