Celebrating UH Leader in Clinical Research

James Liu, MD

For more than two decades, James Liu, MD served as the Chair of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at UH Cleveland Medical Center. Under his leadership, the department expanded to meet the needs of women across the UH system as it grew from six-hospitals to a large regional health system, serving over 1 million patients from Northeast Ohio and beyond.

In addition, Dr. Liu partnered with a respected UH colleague to develop the Global Health Program with a sister OB/GYN residency program in Guyana, South America, initiated and fostered sub-specialty fellowship programs, and led a growing clinical faculty that included specialists, generalists and nurse-midwives. Above all, he developed a culture of teamwork and transparency and emphasized patient safety and quality.

Clinical Research Expert

Throughout his career at UH, Dr. Liu has been the principal investigator on multiple National Institute of Health (NIH) and industrial grants, including the Women's Health Initiative and the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) Clinical Contraceptive Trials Network. He has authored more than 85 peer-reviewed journal articles, and is an internationally known expert in the hormonal changes associated with aging and menopausal therapies. He holds more than five patents in drug delivery.

A graduate of The Ohio State University School of Medicine, Dr. Liu completed his residency at the University of Rochester-Strong Memorial Hospital. He completed his fellowship in Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility at the University of California, San Diego where he later was appointed Assistant Professor in the Department of Reproductive Medicine and Director of the department’s Radioimmunoassay Core Laboratory. Dr. Liu went on to lead the division of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility at the University of Cincinnati OB/GYN Department before joining University Hospitals as Department Chair in 2001.

Leaving a Legacy

The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at UH Cleveland Medical Center is able to practice at the leading edge because of its commitment to clinical research and education. This focus helps ensure patients have access to the latest, most effective treatments and that the next generation of physician leaders are gaining exposure and experience in practicing advanced care. Flexible, spendable funds are vital to promote an environment of robust clinical discovery and education. These funds provide resources, at the discretion of the institute chief, to support a variety of learning and clinical research endeavors.

To continue Dr. Liu’s legacy, in clinical research, the James H. Liu, MD Endowed Fund in Obstetrics and Gynecology Education and Research at UH MacDonald Women’s Hospital has been established to ensure Dr. Liu’s legacy of research and innovation for many years to come.

“We are so grateful to Dr. Liu and the legacy he has created at UH MacDonald Women’s Hospital through his patient care, research, and the many fellows he has trained over the years,” said Patricia M.
