New Wellness Path a Step Toward Total Health at UH Geauga

On October 14, 2025 UH Geauga Medical Center celebrated the opening of a 1.3-mile public wellness trail, made possible by contributions from the Patterson family, the Foundation for Geauga Parks, the Unto Others Foundation and other local donors.

Thanks to this generosity, residents can find whole-person wellness in the form of physical movement, mental clarity and emotional balance just steps away from UH Geauga’s healthcare services. The trail features two loops (0.8 and 0.5 miles) through the hospital’s wooded campus.

“Healing and wellness at UH Geauga Medical Center are not only priorities for our patients, but for those we work and live with in our community,” said Jonathan Sague, DNP, ACNP-BC, EMT-P, Chief Operating Officer, UH Geauga.

The Foundation for Geauga Parks found its mission reflected in the effort to connect people with nature in meaningful, accessible ways. “When UH shared its vision of a public trail serving patients, caregivers, and the broader community, we saw a powerful opportunity to blend wellness, outdoor recreation and the healing qualities of the natural world,” said the foundation’s Executive Director, Christine Davidson.

The path marks the Foundation for Geauga Parks’ first major capital project outside of the Geauga Park District in its nearly 35-year existence, as it looks to broaden partnerships and increase exposure to nature for local residents.

Collaboration was key. Prior to securing funding, UH Geauga leaders and the Geauga Park District worked closely to design a trail that feels restorative and accessible while preserving the beauty of its mature woods. “Creating a path through these natural features required thoughtful planning, but that’s what made the project special,” Davidson noted.

Donors to the Foundation for Geauga Parks and Geauga County community members have shared heartfelt feedback about the trail’s impact, said Davidson. One described it as a “quiet sanctuary” where hospital staff could pause and recharge. Those already walking the trail regularly appreciate the peaceful, wooded path’s proximity to medical services, reinforcing the connection between nature and wellbeing.

“Nature is one of the most powerful, accessible forms of preventive health care we have,” Davidson said. “This trail brings those benefits right to where people live, work and receive care.”

“I’m beyond excited to see the Geauga County community utilize the new hiking trail,” added Val Kovacic-Mauer, Director of Operations and Clinical Services at UH Geauga. “It’s the perfect way to stay active, soak in nature and connect with each other.”
