Diabetes continues to affect thousands of people across our community, particularly in neighborhoods where access to specialized care has long been a challenge. Thanks to a startup grant from the Cleveland Foundation, the UH Diabetes & Obesity Center in Midtown is changing that reality by bringing comprehensive diabetes care, education, technology and support services directly into the community.

From diabetes education and nutrition support to new glucose monitoring technology and medication assistance programs, the center was designed to remove barriers and empower patients to take control of their health.

For patient Nolan Farr, the difference has improved both health and quality of life: “It went from an hour drive to a 10-minute drive or a 10-minute bus ride” to get care, he says. “You can’t beat that.”

“This was a dream of mine, and now it is a dream come true,” says Betul Hatipoglu, MD, Director, Diabetes Center, UH Cleveland Medical Center; and the Mary B. Lee Chair in Adult Endocrinology. “We wanted to bring the services people deserve in the closest possible way to their home.”
