Legacy of Philanthropy
Samuel Mather, Cleveland industrialist, philanthropist and former UH Board Chairman, was one of the most generous benefactors in UH history.
Even in all their wisdom and foresight, our founders and earliest benefactors never could have imagined where University Hospitals stands today – in a new, even greater era of caring for our community.
With the support of more than 60,000 donors, we surpassed our ambitious $1 billion goal for Discover the Difference: The Campaign for University Hospitals – in December 2012, a full year earlier than anticipated. In addition, 2012 was a record-breaking year for us with nearly $160 million in support. In recognition of our community’s growing health care needs, and with unprecedented giving and encouragement from our philanthropic community, we have made the historic commitment to continue the Discover the Difference campaign, with an expanded goal of reaching $1.5 billion by UH’s 150th anniversary in 2016-2017.
The additional $500 million we raise will expand and strengthen UH institutes and centers of excellence, especially UH Harrington Heart & Vascular Institute, UH Neurological Institute, UH Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital and UH Seidman Cancer Center. It will also strengthen our investment and national leadership in innovation, discovery and quality through The Harrington Project for Discovery & Development and UH Institute for Health Care Quality & Innovation.
Our success to date and the very promise our plans hold serve as a poignant tribute to philanthropy's role in opening new doors in medical science, supporting our community, and fueling our mission. We treasure our visionary supporters and look forward to a future filled with even greater promise – a future we invite you to share with us as our partners in ensuring health care excellence for our region.
