Hockey Battles Cancer
Rivals on the ice, hockey teams from Holy Name High School in Parma and Meadville Area Senior High School in Meadville, PA, came together in January to raise nearly $1,300 for UH Seidman Cancer Center. Tom Levanduski, Holy Name's assistant coach, came up with the idea for the fundraiser, Hockey Battles Cancer 2017, after losing a friend to leukemia. "Before he passed away, I would visit him at Seidman Cancer Center. The staff was just amazing," said Levanduski.
The scrimmage started with a ceremonial puck drop, made by a former Holy Name student whose mother passed away from cancer.
To raise money, players from both teams wore special Hockey Battles Cancer jerseys with cancer ribbons, which were auctioned off during the game. The schools and Serpentini Chevrolet of Tallmadge, where Levanduski works in sales, also made generous donations.
"We had an amazing turnout. I feel very honored. Parents, kids and fellow coaches all had a hand in making this event so successful." said Levanduski, who hopes to make this an annual event.
As for the game, Holy Name won, 7-4.
