Ride the Rainbow 2014: Superheroes Unite
On Saturday April 12, more than 1,100 of our most generous friends and benefactors gathered to raise a record $1.4 million for University Hospitals Rainbow Babies & Children's Hospital at ‘Ride the Rainbow: Superheroes Unite.’ The gala was a celebration of the innovative, family-centered care, nationally-ranked clinical programs and pioneering discoveries that have made Rainbow a leader in children’s healthcare in Northeast Ohio and the nation for more than 125 years.
Led by the Rainbow Babies & Children’s Foundation, Ride the Rainbow is the largest biennial benefit for UH Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital. Since its inception, Ride the Rainbow has raised more than $5 million in support of our pediatric clinical programs and services.

Super Auction to Benefit Rainbow’s Kids
The “Ride the Rainbow 2014: Superheroes Unite” gala auction features early online bidding on twelve auction packages that will capture the interest of participants of all ages. This early auction is open to the public starting at 6 a.m. on Thursday, April 10, and will close at 10 p.m. on Saturday, April 12. All proceeds support UH Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital.
Early auction packages include a Sleepover Party for 20 at the Children’s Museum of Cleveland; an exclusive behind-the-scenes ‘Top of the Rainbow’ experience at UH Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital; WKYC Bus Stop Forecast Experience and Tour; Cleveland: Birthplace of Superman VIP tour including limo and dinner; a backyard Childlife Play System—with installation—from Playground World; a Family-Style Dinner Party for 12 in your home prepared by UH Executive Chef John Selick; a Captain America: The Winter Soldier movie poster autographed by Chris Evans; an iPad Mini and more!

‘Superhero for a Day’ Raffle Contest
Filmed in Cleveland in 2013, “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” premiered to rave reviews in a private Cleveland screening on April 1. VIP guests included the winners of Rainbow’s “Superhero for A Day” online raffle contest, held from March 10-30, which attracted more than 600 entries.
And the Winner Is…
“Superhero for A Day” grand prize winner Lisa Arnold of Aurora and her son Bobby, a Rainbow patient, were first escorted via American limousine to award-winning Lockkeeper’s Restaurant in Valley View for a gourmet, four-course dinner. Their Superhero experience continued on the red carpet at the Valley View Cinemark theatre for the Captain America movie premiere, which included complimentary, traditional movie-going food (popcorn, soda, and water) for each. Lisa will also receive a limited-edition Captain America poster autographed by the movie’s hero (Chris Evans) as well as Cleveland directors Anthony and Joe Russo. She will also be the guest of WKYC anchor Kris Pickel for a behind-the-scenes station tour and special on-set viewing of an evening newscast. Finally, Lisa and her husband Bob will attend the sold-out “Ride the Rainbow: Superheroes Unite” gala on April 12 at the Cleveland Convention Center.
Four runners-up in the “Superhero for A Day” contest each received two admissions to the private Captain America screening on April 1. They were: Trevor D. Smith of Lordstown, Jeanine Gardinsky of Twinsburg, Jeffra Carpenter of Kingsville and Barb Birk of Lakewood.
Sponsors of the “Superhero for A Day” contest were American Limousine, The Walt Disney Company, Greater Cleveland Film Commission, Lockkeepers Restaurant, Marvel Studios, Anthony and Joe Russo, and WKYC.
PNC’s Fairfax Connection
PNC is the presenting sponsor of Ride the Rainbow 2014: Superheroes Unite. PNC’s Fairfax Connection (8220 Carnegie Avenue in Cleveland) is a unique community outreach center that serves a Cleveland neighborhood near Rainbow. UH Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital staff will partner with PNC for two important community programs at the Fairfax Connection as ‘Superheroes Unite.’
“Families in the Kitchen” at PNC Fairfax Connection on Wednesday, March 19 celebrated Superfoods in honor of National Nutrition Month. UH Rainbow clinical dietitian Janet Kramer, MPH, RD, LD, and UH Chef Tim Wright shared healthy meal ideas using super nutritious and soul foods. Kramer and Wright engaged PNC Fairfax Connection members through a super-healthy, five-course Mardi Gras/Creole dinner. They also shared information and discussed Superfoods, UH nutrition classes, clinical nutrition therapy programs and healthy shopping, cooking and eating.
Cleveland’s American Heart Association conducted a Health Fair at PNC Fairfax Connection on Saturday, March 29. UH Rainbow exercise physiologist Ginger Fiscella of Rainbow’s ‘Healthy Kids, Healthy Weight’ program demonstrated how regular exercise strengthens the heart. Adult and youth attendees participated in jump rope activities to show the positive impact of exercise on heart health. Guests also received UH pediatric cardiology information and children’s activity pages.
Also, in honor of Ride the Rainbow’s ‘Superheroes Unite’ theme, PNC Fairfax Connection staff will conduct Superhero coloring and essay contests for their youth members during the month of March. Winners will receive a special Rainbow-themed prize package.
