The Society of 1866
University Hospitals’ Society of 1866, named in recognition of our founding year, celebrates the spirit of philanthropy exemplified by our most generous benefactors.
The Samuel Mather Society
The Samuel Mather Society recognizes individuals, family foundations, associations, corporations, foundations and organizations whose cumulative, lifetime giving to UH totals $1 million or more. Through their remarkable generosity, members of the Samuel Mather Society have helped advance the mission we have embraced since 1866 – To Heal. To Teach. To Discover.
UH celebrates the generosity of Samuel Mather Society members through perpetual recognition in our annual Report on Philanthropy and other hospital publications. Samuel Mather Society members are invited to the annual Society of 1866 Celebration (which includes presentation of the Samuel Mather Visionary Award and UH Distinguished Physician Award) and to other special events throughout the year.
The Samuel Mather Society is named in honor of the renowned Cleveland industrialist, philanthropist and former University Hospitals Board Chairman and patient. Mr. Mather is remembered as one of the most generous benefactors in the history of University Hospitals.
