Recognized Leadership in Neonatology
With the opening of the new Quentin & Elisabeth Alexander Neonatal Intensive Care Unit in the spring of 2009, University Hospitals Rainbow Babies & Children's Hospital has once again set new standards for quality and excellence in the treatment of critically ill and extremely low-birth weight babies.
Rainbow Babies & Children's Hospital is an international leader in neonatology and neonatal intensive care. In 2009, Rainbow ranked #2 nationally in neonatal intensive care by U.S. News & World Report (and was ranked in eight other pediatric specialties). Staffed by a dedicated, talented team of physicians, nurses, fellows and other caregivers, the Rainbow NICU cares for more than 1,200 newborns annually and is recognized for its outstanding survival rates. As a testament to its excellence in neonatology, Rainbow is a founding member of the prestigious National Institute of Child Health and Human Development Neonatal Research Network, in which the NICU has led the way in patient care, research and education.
The New Quentin & Elisabeth Alexander NICU
The 38-room Quentin & Elisabeth Alexander NICU marks the first completed Vision 2010 strategic initiative. The NICU features all private rooms, family-centered facilities and amenities, advanced lighting, sound protection, temperature controls, and state-of-the-art equipment and technology. The project called for the renovation of 29,108 square feet of existing space on the 4th floor of Horvitz Tower (which houses Rainbow Babies & Children's Hospital), with additional investment in new diagnostic, operating and treatment equipment to support the most advanced care for our littlest, most fragile patients. Reinforcing the family’s central role in caregiving, the NICU offers extra privacy and special accommodations for parents and loved ones. Expanded diagnostic capabilities eliminate the need for babies to be shuttled around the hospital for tests and invasive procedures.
