With over 15 locations across Northern Ohio and a strong research and innovation infrastructure, we offer an exceptionally talented, integrated team of specialists in every area of cardiovascular health.

UH Harrington-McLaughlin Heart & Vascular Institute has quickly become a premier program with leading physician-scientists, strong NIH funding, and innovative translational research programs in cardiovascular imaging and non-embryonic stem cell biology. Today, UH Harrington-McLaughlin Heart & Vascular Institute is poised to become a recognized national center of excellence in cardiovascular care, research and education.

The Time for Leadership is Now
Cardiovascular disease is now the #1 killer of men and women in the U.S., a major cause of disability and the most costly diagnosis resulting in health care expenditures in the nation. The American Heart Association has estimated that 1 out of 4 men and women in the U.S. are affected by one or more forms of cardiovascular disease. Over 1 million people die each year of cardiovascular disease, including sudden death from heart attack.

The prevalence of cardiovascular disease is expected to rise to unprecedented levels as the percentage of people age 65 and older will nearly double by the year 2030. We must be prepared for greater numbers of patients, who will expect the highest-quality, personalized care available. And this care must deploy the latest techniques and technology, including non-embryonic stem cell and regenerative medicine, and be tailored to the patient’s unique needs. At the same time, we must offer robust, highly visible prevention programs for identifying and saving the lives of people who are at risk of heart attack.

Meeting these needs requires continued investments in top talent, growth of programs, and research, innovation and technology to ensure the superior cardiovascular care our community expects from UH.

Securing Leadership in Advanced Cardiovascular Care
Our plan is to create a national center of excellence that leads in quality and personalized care, research, innovation and education.

  • Securing overall excellence in patient care, research, and education through named endowment of each center.
  • Development of the Atrial Fibrillation Center, Center for Research & Innovation, Heart Valve Center, Vascular Center and other centers to fuel novel therapies, innovative care and research and advanced technology for our patients.
  • Recruiting and retaining preeminent physician-scientist talent through named endowed chairs and fellowships.
  • Fueling research and innovation through a named innovation technology fund, continued growth of our prevention and screening programs and establishment of physician investigator grants.
  • Attracting the leading minds in cardiovascular medicine to UH through named endowed lectureships.
  • Physical space enhancements, including named catheterization labs, electrophysiology labs, a hybrid operating room, patient waiting areas, exam rooms and state-of-the-art equipment.

By supporting these initiatives, you help UH Harrington-McLaughlin Heart & Vascular Institute lead the way in advanced care at a time when our community needs it more than ever.
