Leadership in Cancer Care and Research
University Hospitals Ireland Cancer Center is a national leader in cancer treatment, diagnosis, prevention, research and education. Consistently ranked among the nation’s top cancer centers, UH Ireland Cancer Center is a tertiary referral center providing care for more than 200,000 patient visits annually. Our patients benefit from personalized, leading-edge treatments, together with complementary therapies and support services to ensure unparalleled care at every level.

UH Ireland Cancer Center is part of the National Cancer Institute-designated Case Comprehensive Cancer Center, one of only 40 Comprehensive Cancer Centers in the nation. This designation means patients have access to the most innovative therapies and over 300 clinical trials.

Addressing an Increasing Need for Cancer Care
Northern Ohio’s population is aging and experiences a higher-than-average incidence of breast, lung, genitourinary, colorectal and other types of cancer. With an increasing volume of patients, locations scattered across the UH Case Medical Center campus, and limited physical capacity for further development of programs and services, there is now a strong need for a new cancer hospital specially-designed to deliver the highest-quality, personalized care available to people from across Northern Ohio and beyond.

Our Vision for the New Cancer Hospital
Today, UH is building a new, free-standing Cancer Hospital (click image above for a larger view) at UH Case Medical Center. It will be only the twelfth free-standing cancer hospital in the nation. Scheduled to open in the spring 2011, the 375,000-square-foot Cancer Hospital will house diagnostic, inpatient and outpatient treatment, surgical, and research facilities entirely devoted to cancer and convenient access to services. The new Cancer Hospital will triple our current square footage, house 120 beds with the capacity for 150, and connect to Mather surgical pavilion. It will feature healing gardens and other amenities to instill peace and tranquility for patients and families. The project is approximately $232 million.

Facts about the New Cancer Hospital

  • The new, free-standing Cancer Hospital will bring all UH Ireland Cancer Center departments and services under one roof to optimize patient- and family-centered care, enhance collaboration, and fuel discovery and education.
  • The Cancer Hospitaly will house 120 inpatient beds and have the ability to expand to 150 beds – up from today’s 60 to 75 beds.
  • The building’s design calls for patient care spaces designed for specific patient populations. These spaces will provide both inpatient and outpatient services and encompass all major types of cancer.
  • The Cancer Hospital will pioneer a new approach to cancer care, meeting the everyday needs of spouses, families, and friends while both supporting and empowering them as caregivers.
  • The Imaging and Diagnostic Center will offer screening programs and state-of-the-art diagnostic and imaging services to facilitate the earliest-possible and most accurate diagnosis. It will also accelerate discovery and development of imaging methods to allow better prediction of treatment and response to interventions, with the eventual goal being to see the actual molecular signs of a cancer.
